Carried Out An Aviation Damage Assessment in Khartoum, Sudan

Inherent Risks was tasked by a London based Aviation Insurance Syndicate to deploy a team to Khartoum International Airport, Sudan.

The Mission was to locate five Boeing 737 Airliners operated by three separate International Airlines, and to conduct Damage Assessments for the purpose of insurance claims. Sudan is a Country at War. Since the conflict broke out in April 2023, more than 18,800 people have been killed and over 33,000 injured. Over 10 million people have fled their homes, including more than 5 million children, and over 2 million people who have crossed into neighbouring countries. As such, a considerable amount of proactive intelligence and security preparations were completed prior to this task commencing.

Through Inherent Risks’ extensive network on-the-ground in Sudan, negotiation and mediation between Leaders of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) was carried out and permission to enter the Airport was granted, with a short window of opportunity.

Prior to deployment an Assessment was carried out using Satellite Imagery to locate where each Aircraft was believed to be. Upon arrival, a careful sweep was made for unexploded ordnance and booby traps.

Once each location was swept, each Aircraft was identified by their unique Identification Plates. Some of the Tail Numbers on Aircraft located around the Airport had been painted over.

Two of the 737s we were tasked with locating had been catastrophically destroyed.

The remaining three Aircraft had been looted and ransacked inside. One in particular had been clearly used as accommodation for troops who had been stationed at the airport. And one had bullet holes and shrapnel damage to the fuselage, with the remains of a deceased soldier inside.

Our team then collected photographic and video evidence inside and outside the 737s.

Through the Satellite Communications systems our team deployed with, a brief Report was transmitted back to Inherent Risks in London, with photographs. After liaising with the Insurance Syndicate and confirming that they had all of the information they required, the team on-the-ground were advised that the Mission was complete.

Inherent Risks then provided support and tracking for the teams extraction from the Airport, and then from Khartoum. See also: Conducted Multiple Emergency Evacuations From Sudan During a Coup
